The short version
Bragging Rights is a family and classroom game, and a lot of the people playing it are children. So we collect as little as possible, we don't track anyone, and we never sell your information. There are no analytics and no trackers in the app.
What we store
About each player: the name you type in (a first name or nickname is plenty โ please don't use full names for children), your chosen emoji, your age and optionally your birth month, your level, XP and coins, how long you've spent actively answering questions, and an optional PIN. We never ask for a date of birth.
One email address per group: when a family or classroom is set up, the adult doing it gives an email address. We use it for exactly two things โ sending the join code so it can be found again, and sending a sign-in link if the PIN is forgotten. We never ask children for an email, never send marketing, and never pass it to anyone. A boss can change it any time in Manage.
Usage counts: we keep a simple first-party note that a player opened the app on a given day โ one row, nothing else โ so we can see whether the game is being enjoyed. No third-party analytics, no trackers, no advertising identifiers, ever.
About each group: the family or classroom name, its join code, the weekly prize, and โ for the regional leaderboards โ a region and town chosen from a list, plus a school name for classrooms. This is typed in, never detected: the app does not use GPS or your device's location.
About play: each round's category, score, number correct and how long it took.
If you message us: whatever you write, plus the name and (optional) email address you put in the form.
Who can see it
Everyone in your family or classroom can see each other's names, levels and scores โ that's the whole point of the game. Teachers can also see how long each student has spent playing.
Signed-in players elsewhere in Bragging Rights can see your group's name and its average score on the world, region and town boards, and your display name, group name and level on the players board. Nobody outside your group ever sees your age, your PIN, your email, or your group's join code.
The scoreboard on the welcome screen โ the only one visible without signing in โ shows just a group name, emoji and average score. It does not reveal your town, your school, how many players you have, or anyone's individual name.
The person who set up this site (the super admin) can see all groups and players in order to run it.
Where it lives
Everything is stored in a single database file on this website's own hosting. It is not shared with any other company. The only time information leaves the server is when you send us a message and the site owner has email delivery switched on โ then your message and contact details are passed to the email provider (SMTP2GO) purely to deliver it.
Cookies & your device
We use two cookies, and only to keep you signed in: one remembers which group this device unlocked, the other remembers which player you are.
Your device also remembers your colour scheme, whether you've seen the "what's new" note, and whether you dismissed the add-to-home-screen tip. That stays on your phone and is never sent to us.
In Spelling Bee, your device's own text-to-speech reads the word aloud. That's a built-in feature of your phone or browser, not something we send anywhere.
Children
This app is designed to be used by children with the involvement of a parent, caregiver or teacher. The person who creates a family or classroom is responsible for who they invite. We ask for an age only to set the right question difficulty โ never a full birthday โ and we encourage first names or nicknames instead of full names.
Deleting your information
Your family boss or teacher can delete any player from the Manage screen, and can delete the whole group. Deleting a player removes their scores, XP and history; deleting a group removes everything belonging to it. Both are permanent and immediate.
You can also ask us to delete anything you've sent us โ use the message button below.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can ask what information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Get in touch and we'll sort it out.
Notifications
If you switch on notifications, we store the delivery address your phone or browser gives us (a push subscription or device token) so we can send you reminders such as the weekly result. Notifications carry no personal information; you can turn them off at any time in your device settings or in the app, and the token is then deleted.
The iPhone and Android apps
The apps are the same game as the website and talk to the same server. Instead of cookies they keep a sign-in token on your device. When you choose to carry a web sign-in into the app, the app briefly opens your browser so braggingrights.io can hand that token across โ nothing else is read from your browser. The apps contain no advertising, no analytics and no third-party software development kits.
